How much yarn to buy?
Yarn Yardage & Weight Calculator
The vast majority of patterns will specify an estimated yardage to complete the project. But if you are using a larger or smaller gauge - you may have to recalculate, or if you are trying to make your own pattern this may help you calculate the yardage to specify.
Option 1 - This uses the 10 stitches x 10 rows swatch from the previous page. Hold the yarn (don't let go) OR put some scotch tape marking the end of the swatch, now frog the single row of 10 stitches.
Measure the yarn with ruler or measuring tape from your finger or tape to the remaining partial swatch (now only 9 rows). This number will be the length of yarn to make 10 stitches and can be helpful to calculate how much total yarn to use if you know the number of stitches (i.e. number of rows x number of stitches per row for a blanket).
Option 1: Estimate Yardage from Frogged Row
Need your gauge? Use our Gauge Calculator (opens in a new window) to find your numbers, then enter them below!
(Measured from your finger to the start of the partial swatch)
Option 2 - The practice of weighing your crochet gauge swatch is widely used in the EU (and globally) because European yarn systems rely heavily on metric weight-to-length ratios (meters per gram), whereas the US system traditionally relies on standardized thickness categories (#0–#7).
Tip: Weigh your test swatch (or a small finished piece like a single motif) on a digital kitchen scale, then measure how many yards of yarn were used to make it.
