Understanding & Calculating Your Crochet Gauge
Before diving into a project, taking the time to crochet and measure a gauge swatch ensures your finished piece turns out the exact size you expect.

The gauge specified on patterns is the number of stitches and rows that fit into a specific measurement of fabric, standardly a 4x4 inch (10x10 cm) square.
It reflects your personal tension—how tightly or loosely you pull the yarn—along with your choice of hook and yarn.
MAKE A SWATCH of 10 stitches by 10 rows:
- Chain 11, then working in the 2nd chain from the hook, make 10 stitches in the specified stitch, ch1 and turn at the end of row.
- Make 10 rows total.
Don't cut off the yarn in the sample you made, you can simply frog it and use it for your project.
